Noticed this big sandstone church in its leafy churchyard just across the road from our coach drop-off point and paid it a short visit. The tower is very impressive and there's some intricate stonework around the entrance. Inside I was greeted by a friendly lady who made me feel really welcome and shared a lot of interesting facts about both the church's past and its present. The interior is spacious but unpretentious, with wooden galleries along three sides. There's a finely carved pulpit and some lovely stained glass. Loved the very detailed embroidered picture depicting the main landmarks, natural features and daily life in and around Moffat. Well worth a look!

Distinctive and impressive, St Andrew's Church in Moffat opened its doors to worshippers in September 1887. The largest church in South West Scotland, the red sandstone structure was built in an era when the town was flourishing.
The presence of a church in Moffat has been written about since 1177. In the 1600s, that church was used as a prison for Convenanters awaiting execution. In 1790, the Earl of Hopetoun built a church opposite the Black Bull but this didn't last long and less than a hundred years later St Andrew's replaced it.
The tower is most striking, with two octagonal stair towers beside it. The rest of the church is rather subdued by comparison.
Inside, the nave is rather reminiscent of a barn with a high wooden paneled ceiling and gallery. The trancepts are subtle and the eye is towards the rose window and multitude of stunning stained glass.
The gallery sweeps around the interior, with an uninterrupted view above or below thanks to sturdy iron supports and set back columns.
Also on the gallery level is a large organ, added in 1894. The gentle curve of the wooden ceiling provides ideal acoustics for the instrument.
